Case Study: Transforming the Children’s Ward at Bedford Hospital
NHS Project
The Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s Capital Projects Department partnered with Selo Construction and Inspire to transform a standard central side ward within the busy Riverbank Children’s Ward at Bedford Hospital. Led by NHS Capital Projects Manager Mandy Shoban, the project required a full strip-out and bespoke refurbishment to turn a sterile clinical layout into a vibrant, uplifting, and therapeutic space for young patients. Because the project took place in a live hospital environment, it demanded precise execution, strict adherence to healthcare safety regulations, and close coordination with hospital staff to ensure zero disruption to the daily operations of the wider pediatric unit.
To tackle the anxiety often experienced by children during hospital stays, the team brought a highly creative, nature-themed design concept to life, focusing on an immersive environment that distracts and comforts patients. The delivery included the installation of specialist Altro safety flooring meticulously designed to look like real grass, complemented by state-of-the-art LED light ceiling panels that mimic natural daylight to reduce clinical glare. Play-focused interactive elements were also integrated, such as a small push-along toy lawnmower that matches the grass flooring and has become an instant hit with the children. Alongside these playful features, the room was outfitted with modern clinical infrastructure, state-of-the-art medical equipment, and bright, uplifting color schemes across all walls and fixtures.
The finished side ward has successfully redefined how pediatric spaces can look and feel, proving that creative design combined with robust commercial construction can significantly improve the patient experience. To celebrate the completion of the room, Selo Construction attended an official VIP opening ceremony alongside the High Sheriff of Bedford, senior NHS nursing staff, and hospital estate managers. The transformed space has since received overwhelming praise from both hospital staff and families for creating a calming, child-centric environment.
